The Anglo-Ndebele War of 1893 began in October of that year. The Ndebele forces numbered around 18,000 men, while the British South Africa Company (BSAC) had 3,500 fighters, including 1,100 whites, 2,000 Tswana auxiliary fighters provided by Khama, and 400 Shona and Cape auxiliaries.
The BSAC forces were better equipped and organized than the Ndebele forces and could move faster because they had horses. They also had modern firearms such as machine guns, pounders, and maxim guns.
The war was characterized by a series of battles between the two sides. The first major battle was fought at Kraaipan on October 12th, where the BSAC forces defeated a Ndebele army led by Mjaan. This victory gave the BSAC control over most of Matabeleland.
The Ndebele continued to resist British control and launched several counter-attacks against BSAC forces. However, they were ultimately defeated in a final battle at Gadade on November 4th. After this battle, Lobengula fled northwards towards Zambia where he eventually died.
